This course comprises of plant design together with elements of economics and optimization process. A process will be selected to form a chemical plant. Students will be evaluated on the basis of whether the design works and on the basis of economics, environmental and societal impact. Students will be exposed to the application of CAD to assess their designs. The project is to design chemical process plants with the following chemical process anatomy adopted from IChemE rules: raw material storage, feed preparation, reaction, product separation, product purification and product storage. The purpose of this course is to provide the students with the rationale in the plant design process where chemical engineering principles and applications will be used to build plants that work economically, safely, environment-friendly and without raising concerns in the society.
