COURSE SYNOPSIS

This course is an introduction to policies, laws and regulations related to wood-based industries such as Labour Law (Employees Act 1955, Workmen's Compensation Act 1952, Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, Factories and Machinery Act 1967) and the relevant laws of nature around (Environmental Quality Act 1974). It also discusses the role of law in the management of wood-based industry and Sabah Forest Policy 2018.
This course also discusses the current issues related to tropical timber industry and their implications for the industry. Issues related to Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS), forest certification, timber certification and International Standard Organization (ISO) will also be discussed.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

Rationale for the inclusion of the course in the programme: Laws and policies are important elements in ensuring synergies and the timber industry will enhance the knowledge and skills of graduates in the management of the timber industry.
